Beitong Liu is an erhu performer and educator whose artistry bridges Chinese traditional music with contemporary, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary practices. Her work spans traditional Chinese music, contemporary and experimental music, jazz, opera, musical theater, and improvisation. She currently serves as an Erhu Instructor and Graduate Program Coordinator at the US–China Music Institute (USCMI) of the Bard College Conservatory of Music.

Liu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Erhu Performance and a Master’s degree in Chinese Music and Culture from Bard College, where she studied erhu with renowned erhu virtuoso and educator Hongmei Yu.

As a performer, Liu has appeared at major venues and institutions across the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Fisher Center at Bard, the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Vassar College, and Rutgers University, as well as cultural and diplomatic events in New York and Washington, D.C. She has also been invited for guest artist residencies at Skidmore College and Binghamton University, where she has engaged in performance, cultural exchange, and educational activities. In 2024, she appeared as an erhu soloist in the Sound of Spring concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Her other featured appearances include the U.S. premiere of Painted Skin – A Chamber Opera and the musical theater production Shanghai Sonata at Vassar College.

As a member of the Bard East/West Ensemble, Liu has toured with ensemble extensively in China, performing at leading institutions and cultural venues including Tsinghua University, the Central Conservatory of Music, and the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music.

Liu received First Prize at the 2024 Singapore Star International Arts and Culture Festival Erhu Competition and was selected as a 2023–24 Bespoken Fellow. She is also a co-founder of Echoes of China, an ensemble dedicated to presenting and reimagining Chinese traditional music through performance, education, and community engagement.

As an educator, Liu emphasizes strong technical foundations, musicianship, and expressive understanding while encouraging students to engage with the cultural traditions of the erhu and explore its evolving role in contemporary music.
