The Conservatory’s five-year double-degree program currently includes students majoring in erhu, dizi, guzheng, Chinese percussion, pipa, ruan and guqin. Students of other Chinese instruments are welcome to apply. Studio instruction is provided by the world-renowned Central Conservatory of Music, using our state-of-the-art video conferencing facility as well as in-person lessons on the Bard campus and in Beijing.

During 5 years at Bard, students will work towards two degrees, a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in a liberal arts field of their choice. Bard College offers degrees in dozens of academic programs. View the degree program webpages below for more information.

how to apply

Applying to the Bard Conservatory requires two applications, one for Bard College (the Common Application), and one for the Conservatory.

Applications are due annually on January 1.


Students in the Chinese instrument program at Bard perform regularly in solo concerts, small mixed Chinese/Western chamber ensembles, and the Bard Chinese Ensemble, which holds a public concert on the Bard campus every semester.
